From Bread Hawker to School Assembly Singer: The Journey of a CLEP Child Before CLEP came into our lives, my daughter’s mornings revolved around balancing a tray of bread and fish on her head. She walked the streets under the hot sun, calling out to strangers to make a sale so we could eat and survive. It was hard and heartbreaking, yet we had no choice. As a parent, it hurt deeply to see her grow up too fast, missing out on school, childhood, and joy. Then CLEP found us. They offered her what I couldn’t provide at the time, an education, a uniform, school meals, mentorship, and hope.
The first day she wore that uniform and stepped into school, she turned to me and smiled in a way I had never seen before. Now, instead of carrying a tray on the street, she carries books. Instead of shouting ‘Bread and fish!’, she sings joyfully during school assembly. CLEP didn’t just give her access to school; they gave her dignity.
